GOVERNMENT & POLICY AFFAIRS (GPA) Team
The political and regulatory processes in Washington, D.C., as well as the states, are integral to the operations of a financial services company like Transamerica. Providing expertise to legislators and regulators on matters relevant to our business, attending legislative and regulatory meetings, organizing visits to our offices by political figures, and providing resources to help employees engage in the political process just barely scratches the surface of what the GPA team does.
Get to Know the Team:
Sean joined Transamerica in December 2019 as Vice President and Senior Director after working in similar advocacy roles for ING US/Voya Financial, Zurich North America, and the American Insurance Association. Prior to his private sector work experience, he worked on the professional staff of the House Banking Committee (since renamed the House Financial Services Committee) on a variety of consumer credit, insurance, and housing issues. Sean also serves as Secretary for Transamerica PAC.
Sean received his undergraduate business degree from Iowa State University, his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, and his MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Outside of family and work commitments, Sean is an avid golfer, cyclist and runner.
Arielle joined Transamerica in January 2020; bringing with her several years of PAC experience working for the American Medical Association and Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America. She managed fundraising, disbursements and compliance with federal requirements for these large PACs. Prior to entering the PAC community, she worked on U.S. Senate campaigns in Alaska and Michigan, and interned in the U.S. House of Representatives. In addition to her work in politics, she has served as an English-second-language teacher for both adults and children in Spain.
Arielle has a degree in International Studies & Political Science from Rhodes College, and is adamant that Memphis has the best BBQ in the country. A native of Louisiana/Alabama, she currently resides in Washington, DC with her cat Binky. Outside of work, she loves running, true-crime docuseries, and LSU football (Geaux Tigers).
Austin joined Transamerica in 2019, following experience working with National Journal’s custom research arm and managing relationships with the heads of public affairs, advocacy, and government relations for major trade associations and corporations. Previously, he was a legislative intern with the U.S. House of Representatives, focusing on the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s policy work on telehealth.
Austin is a graduate and Hall of Fame inductee of the University of Mississippi, colloquially known as Ole Miss, where he received a degree in Public Policy and Leadership from the Trent Lott Institute for Public Policy. A Tennessee native, he now lives in Washington, D.C. An ardent traveler, Austin has a series of trips, concerts, and festivals on his do-list for a post-COVID world.
Mike joined Transamerica in 2016 as our State Government Relations leader. Before joining us, Mike was a practicing attorney representing life insurers in litigation and regulatory matters for about 15 years, both as outside and in-house counsel. Mike had a lengthy business career before attending law school, including a 5-year stint as a small business owner with his father.
Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Kean University, his law degree from Rutgers Law School and a Master’s in Strategy, Leadership & Management from Michigan State University. Mike has been married to Randi for 35 years and they have two daughters – Alexa (26) and Carly (23). Alexa is one of our Transamerica colleagues and Carly just began her special education teaching career in Lansing, MI. Fun fact – Mike took a hand at stand-up comedy back in the 1980’s, but law school seemed like the better career move!
Chris re-joined Transamerica in 2013 after teaching finance and accounting for five years at a small liberal arts college. Prior to his current role in GPA covering emerging actuarial issues in the U.S., Chris worked in various financial reporting and risk management roles at both Transamerica and Allianz.
Chris is a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries and holds a degree in Mathematics and German from Macalester College, and an MBA from the University of Iowa. Outside of work, he likes to spend time with his family, hike, bike, and run.
